My Dad’s 1937 Buick, growing old and a little sentimental…

in #life7 years ago

After my Dad died I found an old family photo of him as a young man. The photo is of Dad standing next to his ’37 Buick. My Grandparents and a couple of Great Aunts are also in the photo. When I first saw this photo, I thought of a line from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’. Kevin Costner’s character Ray Kensella, realizes the catcher in the movie was his father as a young man and says, “I only saw him years later when he was worn down by life”. My Dad was 30 when I was born, so by the time I was a teenager he too was a little worn down, which makes me sad. But in the photo, Dad looks like he is living large in a pinstriped suit complete with a pocket-handkerchief. Both his Buick and his shoes look shiny and new. I would love to have had a conversation with my Dad to hear the story of his “Buick”. Did he buy it new or used? Dad would have been 16 in 1937 so I’m guessing used. What did it cost and how fast did it go? It looks like it might be black, but it could have been dark blue? Did he use it for some youthful adventure, if so how about ‘all’ the details Dad? How long did he own it and why did he sell it? It’s interesting that one of the coolest vintage cars I know of is the 1937 Studebaker Coupe Express pickup truck. I came to this conclusion before I knew about my Dad’s ’37 Buick. I’m guessing somewhere in my genetic code lies my fascination for beautiful vintage vehicles designed in 1937…16422708_675409402621101_3226153075390122364_o.jpg
