I just hate being “That Guy”

in #life7 years ago

With my career as a Lineman, I on a rare occasion, have it go and disconnect power to a customers house due to non-pay. You know just as well as I do everyone has a story as to why they haven’t paid. Some may be legit and other... well it’s just excuses. As an old Lineman told me....
Excuses are like A$$holes...everyone has one and I don’t want to hear it

We as a company work with people and give them plenty of chances to pay. We bend over backwards for people and really done want to shut the electricity off. When they get 3 months behind that is when things get serious. After contacting them multiple times and not making any leeway I, as a Lineman, head to their house to either collect money or shut the power off.
When I physically show up and tell them what is going to happen their mood tends to change a bit. Oh and would you look at that, they magically have money to make a payment on their bill.

Actual payment money
So I write them a receipt take their cash and head straight to the shop. If they don’t have the money then and there, guess what, the power gets shut off. This is the part I really don’t like doing but with repeat non-pay customers it makes it a little easier to do. There are so many things running through my head when I do have to shut it off.. kids...elderly people...extreme hot or cold temperatures. All these things are considered and investigated before the lights go out. Yet it doesn’t mean that it makes it that much easier.
It’s amazing what people do when their feet are put to the fire. Money shows up out of nowhere, the truth comes out, or the info needed is brought forth. A little pressure might be needed to get someone to do the “Right Thing

Until next time

Have you ever found yourself threatened or felt that you were in any danger when doing this?

No I haven’t but then again I haven’t had to do it very often. My stature isn’t very intimidating either. Lol.

Wow… had no idea you would have to have any contact with people whose power you were shutting off. That has to be pretty awkward.

Ya it is a bit weird and doesn’t happen too often. With the new meters we have, they can be disconnected from the office. We save those special ones for the repeat non pay customers.

Doesn’t sound like a fun position to be in.

I have never thought about such cases when "that guy" comes. However I have heard that such cases actually happens.
