VMF (3900m) Easy yet hard

in #life7 years ago

Hello! This post is about our climb to VMF peak.

VMF is abbreviation it means maritime force peak (translated from Russian). The first person peaking it was A. Zjuzin back in 1939. Couldn't find any details about this guy but he's definitely not football player...

This was our last peak before going to Elbrus. We were climbing it the next day after long 16 hour route (Fizkuljturnik-Uzlovaja). We hit of at the same time and took the same ascent up the snow until we hit the cliffs. Once we were there we took a path to right and balayed about 50m down to safer area. Then we traversed toward the peak, about 400 meters. Now we took off our crampones and were ready to climb.

We used 4 x 50m ropes to build the path for inexperienced climbers. By using ascender they could climb the peak without hesitation. We did it beacause once again we were group of 13 people and we had to move fast.

Even though we build safe path some of us still had a time to rest. Things didn't move as fast as we expected...

After two hours we peaked VMF. It went pretty smooth...

The whole climb from camp to peak took us 6 hours. I have to say it was fast for a group of 13 people.

The view was breathtaking! You can actually see our last day peak in this picture.
I wish we could have stayed longer on top cause we had enough time to go back, but the weather started getting rough. And we still had to clear our camp and get back to base camp.
So after two hours we started packing our bags and hit of to base camp. It was about 8-9km hike down the woods and moraines. On a half way back it started raining, we were soaking wet... Gladly we booked hot dinner in local cafeteria.

I know, I was talking about base camp a lot. I will post more of it later...
Here is a glimps of how mountains look like from there. Guess what is the cabin for?

Many Thanks! And keep exploring!
Cheers!
