Day by day, animal rescuers are giving their time, love and money to do a greater good, to save dogs from a sure death. For them, there is no better joy that to give cats and dogs a second opportunity. Even in countries where the economic situation is not ideal, these real life heroes are working to find means to rescue and protect abandoned animals.

In Venezuela in recent years, the percentage of abandoned animals has been increasing, mainly because the country has been suffering a serious economic crisis that has been affecting its citizens and specially its pet population. It is alarming to see dogs that are only skin and bones wandering the streets trying to find sustenance. To see more and more pets being abandoned by their owners because they have the money to buy food.

However, there are many organization out there doing whatever they can save as many dogs as they can. These two organizations are the best example that there is still hope.

  • 2nd opportunity foundation: “Because every dog deserves a second opportunity”

This nonprofit organization is being run by a single woman: Vanessa. She created this organization to save dogs from streets and some pets that have been abandoned by their owners. Second opportunity is not a shelter; Vanesa is always trying to give the recued dogs a better life by being adopted. Well, she says her house is not a shelter, but she has 32 dogs living with her and her family and another 40 dogs in another house.

The organization is supported by private donations from several people around Venezuela and America. With donations, Vanessa is able to give medical attention, shelter and food to her dogs and also to help other organizations with similar goals. This woman dedicate her entire time and life to rescue dogs, she even wake up at 5am every morning to prepare food to the dogs she has at home. She spends her day taking care of her dogs’ needs and going to the vet with those animals who need it.

Dogs’ closest living relatives are wolves – but their exact lineage is unclear. We do know that humans began to train and domesticate wolves over 15,000 years ago.
