Fumble Fingers !

OOPS !! I bought a shiny red crackle glass jug off of ebay as part of a Christmas gift for my cousin who collects crackled art glass pieces. After checking my Steem and stuff I saw in my gmail that the jug had been delivered. I grabbed my fluffy cape, pulled it over my house dress, slid my feet into some sandals, grabbed my flashlight and shuffled out across the street to my mailbox. I'm semi rural....it's across the street.... arghhhh..... only one car passed me while there, so not too many witnesses to my fancy mode of nighttime dressing. LOL !!

Like all glass pieces I buy, the first thing I did once it was out of the box, was take it to the sink to wash. I was very careful as I always am, yet right as I was about to grab a towel to dry it off, I accidentally tapped it on the side of the sink, at which time it semi exploded into a bazillion pieces in my hands. Crackle glass you see, already has a million cracks in it, once it hit, it simply crumbled. Big pieces, small pieces SLIVERS and bits. It may have been 5 minutes ... no maybe 6 minutes out of the box.

It only cut my hands in 4 places and only one of them left a blood trail to the living room where I grabbed a clean cloth. That makes it sound worse than it turned out, but the cut instead of going really deep, it sliced a little sideways which made it bleed a while. What a nuisance !!

After getting a clean cloth around my fingers I realized a few slivers were clinging to the top of my dress, so I stood over the washer and peeled it off from the back and up over my head. No... don't even try to imagine that feat, while holding the bottom of the front of the dress over over the top of the dress to keep any of the glass from falling to the floor ! Yeah... that was fun..... real. fun.

Below is a picture very similar to what the jug looked like when it came out of the box. This photo isn't mine. I grabbed it from google. I didn't have the jug long enough to take my own photo.

I text a picture of the broken piece to my cousin who it was originally intended for and labeled it "Sneak Peek at your Christmas present" LOL... yeah... I thought I was funny.

Ok.... not the way I planned to spend my evening, doing self first aid and washing and vacuuming to make sure no slivers and bits are left.

Jeepers Creepers.... tonight I am Charlie Brown !

Hope no mini disasters have happened to you tonight.

Take care !

Love ya!

Fumble Bumbles, that's me!

I have broken so many glasses in my sink that way. Need to install a foam siding around it, to protect breakables from clutzes like ourselves :)

I guess I have been lucky before, but it wasn't smart not to put a dish towel in the bottom of the sink and rest the jug on it while washing, but you know, at the moment I thought I was up to the task without it..... so much for what I think sometime. LOL !

Oh no! What a beautiful piece...I'm sorry that it broke!!!

Me too, but NOW...... I get to shop some more. LOL ... oh well.

That sounds like a great plan!!

I just hope it was not sent cracked! I suppose all those cracks might weaken it like you wrote and allowed it to explode when I was just tapped.

I look glass things over pretty good as soon as they come out of the box. I check for chips on the smooth edges, broken but glued back on handles and obvious other flaws. The way this one crumbled, I can't imagine anyone getting away with cracking it in any other way without it doing the same thing, but to be sure, you just never know. I would think twice now about owning a larger piece of this stuff. I still have one jug that is mine that I have washed with no issue. I will be EXTRA careful about doing it again in the future. I mean, if you collect any kind of glass and have it sitting out, eventually you need to give it all a good rinse. I learned this lesson well. 🙂

unpleasant situation ... But everywhere you have to look for your advantages. The next pitcher may be a little better.))

Yes..... and I will be MUCH more careful next time. It was my fault for not being careful enough with my wet hands. 🙂

It really was a beauty and I do love crackle glass! Sorry that happened and I keep wondering if it was rendered a little more frail in the shipping? I think I have only ever purchased it in person, but, can't say that for sure. I know people buy glass online all the time, but after the first accident, I stopped.

It was a piece I really wanted. Booooo!

I thought it was a beauty too ! 😕

I buy glass off of ebay and etsy occassionally, however, most of the time it is for myself and I don't collect crackle glass even though I do have one very nice crackled jug. I like the cased glass for myself and it is usually pretty sturdy (barring handles possibly) since it is at least double layers of glass. I have never received a piece broken yet.... yet.

This jug was wrapped and cushioned well, but I did wonder if the bumping around could have weakened it too, but if so, it was not obvious when I unwrapped and inspected it. I guess I believe with all the cracks already in it, it may be a bit precarious the bigger the piece that you get. Just a theory.

I do find some treasures in the vintage and consignment shops too.

Sorry you lost a piece that you really wanted.

I think some of my best pieces were found in box lots at local (not my local! LOL) auctions.

Oh, my!! The goodies I have found in those $1 box lots. Where you get 30 boxes for $1.00! All they want to do is get rid of stuff so they don't have to haul it off! I bought an old Singer treadle sewing machine year ago, I think it was something like $35.00 and it was in pristine condition. When I got it home and opened the drawers (you know how they had little drawers to keep sewing notions) it had sewing notions that were from when the machine was new and still unopened. And little sample lipsticks from the pharmacy and all kinds of cool stuff like that!

I was totally blown away. I still have them, right in those same drawers. I have no idea why I left them there, but, it was like part of its charm.

Now glassware. Oh, I used to love finding a cool piece. Still do, but now I have no extra space to put these things! I must need a bigger house!
