Wherever you go, there you are

For years I thought that this statement meant to be present. That no matter where you are, your conscious mind should also be there. Because it’s so easy to get distracted with our thoughts, our to-do list, our phones, that the skill of simply being present is being lost in this society. But I had a profound realization today. While the above statement is very true, the real meaning behind the statement “wherever you go, there you are” is more about your hidden self being present at all times.

Whether you’re at school, at work, hanging with friends, or chilling at home alone, your underlying subconscious personality is always present. As much as we like to portray different behaviors at work compared to when we’re with our friends, and that may be an important skill to have, our core beliefs, our core personality traits, our hidden selves, are driving our actions and thoughts.

And the truth is…

While you might be pretty good at hiding your hidden self from others, at least for a while, you’ll never be able to hide it from yourself. Your true self always shines through.

The sooner that you can accept this fact, the sooner happiness will come to you. You don’t need to pretend to be someone you’re not. You don’t need to act like someone you’re not. You need to accept that who you are is who you are. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

You might be different than your coworkers. You spouse might not like who you truly are. Your friends might be surprised by you.

But every day that you try to bottle up and hide yourself from the world you literally die a little bit inside. Depression sinks in. Self-doubt governs your decisions. And your sense of self-worth fades away.

Make the decision today that you’re not going to hide who you are anymore. Reveal your hidden self to the world.

Own it.

And love yourself for it. Because…

…wherever you go, there you are.
