Presentation Skills
Presenting is the act or process of showing/explaining/demonstrating the content of a topic to an audience.
Presentation is a planned and deliberate method of communication created with a specific goal in mind.
Here are some presentation fears:
- How can I get them to listen to me?
- How can I keep their attention?
- Why am I so nervous?
Here are three basic tips to effective communication :
A. Prepare
B. Deliver
C. Review
- Preparation: This is the first and most important step. Proper presentation prevents presentation predicaments.
Tips to preparation:
- Determine the purpose of your presentation.
- Identify your audience
- consider the setting(place).
- outline your message.
- Select a tool medium (powerpoint, board etc).
- Create your presentation.
Presentation Outline:
- Opening
- Transition
- Closing
Tips and guidelines:
Strong Opening statement to engage your audience; e.g: Shocking statistics, Powerful quote, Deep question.
For example:
"Do you know that 6 people die of malaria every 10 minute".Transition: This is how you deliver your message to the audience.
Message: This is what you want people to know or be able to do after the presentation.
- Highlight key words and definitions.
- use relevant examples and visuals (diagrams, videos etc).
- Strong closing statement: For a memorable finishing.
You can use:
- powerful quote
- clear action steps
- Concise summary.
- Brilliant recommendations
B. Deliver - Pay attention to core components
- Opening->transition->closing
- Presentation is not one way.
Non-verbal components
- Make eye contacts.
- Body posture is very important
- Hand gestures
Verbal components
- Use the right vocabularies, grammar, tenses.
- Let your presentation be concise, clear, and simple.
Listening and objectives
- Handling questions
C. Review Presentation
Did you achieve your desired objectives? - Audience feedback and questions help you evaluate whether your points were clearly communicated.
- Action/inaction of audience might be an indication of presentation effectiveness.
- Don't beat yourself up if you don't achieve your goal. If at first you don't succeed, try and try again.
