Overview of the Andre De Villiers Tactical Butcher knife

in #life8 years ago

I have always been a huge fan of beefy, overbuilt pocket knives. I like my knives like tanks, basically. I purchased this knife from knifecenter for $460 shipped while they had it in stock. I had heard mixed things about these knives that were a bit off putting, but I decided to give it a shot. I personally loved this knife very quickly. It sports a 3.75" S35VN steel blade that is almost a quarter of an inch thick at 0.17". It has milled titanium handles as well as a titanium pocket clip, and weighs in at 7.4 ounces which showcases just how hefty this knife is.

This monster of a mid-tech knife comes from a maker that lives in South Africa named Andre De Villiers. If you don't know what mid-tech means, it's basically in between being a custom knife, and a production knife. (Think high quality production knife with finishing touches done to it by hand.) The quality of this knife is extremely good for the price point. The action on mine could be a bit better, but it is usually smooth and deploys without issue. If I oiled the pivot and blade a bit more I think it would smoothen out some. The handles have been milled to give a good grippy feel to it without being too harsh or too sticky feeling.

The only downsides of this knife for me personally was the flipper tab could be polished a bit, and the pivot system could use some better bearings. After flipping the knife open and closing it several times the flipper tab starts to grate on my finger which feels slightly unpleasant. I also feel that the ball bearings they used for the pivot could use an upgrade because at times the blade doesn't deploy fully even with a fair amount of force applied. Again, I think some good quality knife oil could help this. The back of the handles could also use some mild polishing just for it to feel a tiny bit better in the hand. But, it feels good in the hand none the less.

Aesthetics wise this knife really impresses in my opinion. It is one of the better looking pocket knives I've handled and I feel that it has a good balance of elegance, usefulness, and just badass ridiculousness all mixed into the design. Overall, for the price, I think this knife is a good buy. I did not get to anodize or customize this particular one, though had I done so, I'm sure I would have loved it even more. If the pivot was a bit better and it was polished around the edges, I would have really no complaints at all about this knife in particular. In conclusion, if you want a tank of a knife that can take some abuse and look good doing so, and are willing to pay a hefty price, then I would highly recommend this knife.
