The Search For Migrating Humpback Whales
Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow my posts.
If you are lucky enough to be in Zanzibar between July and November you can witness Humpback whales migrating.
We set out at 6 AM from Kizimkazi in the hope of seeing one of these 15m long humpbacks. It's really easy to see dolphins around here but Humpback whales are much more difficult.
This means that if you do come across a whale it's a complete surprise.
After exploring the ocean for almost 2 hours we'd all given up hope. We actually decided to head back to shore, and it was only then one of the other passengers looked around and noticed there was a humpback whale about 25 metres behind the boat!
Unable to contain her excitement she screamed "there's a whale!".
We turned around and got a bit closer and the Humpback put on an incredible display of tail slapping for the next 5 minutes.
None of us knew why it did this - getting back to shore we checked in with some of the locals and it's still unknown as to why they do it. Perhaps he was having fun?
