Pain, Pain Go Away!

Physical pain is ... well ... painful. Though some of us might enjoy certain types of pain, in general, we are all trying to avoid it. And for a good reason - self-preservation. Pain is the body's natural way of saying "Hello! Something is not right! Pay attention here!"

Pain from touching a hot stove saves us from burning our hands off. Hunger pain moves us to find food and nourish our bodies. Tooth pain makes us go and see a dentist before infection spreads all over the body... In other words pain is a very useful program to have on our hard drives. Unfortunately most of us are not skilled at working with the code. When a glitch occurs, we tend not to fix it and simply let the program run in loops over and over and over.

What then should we do with the pain?

We can try to ignore it and bury it deeper into the tissue, we can make it a part of our story (a part of your character), we can even use it to get attention and care we crave. Or we can acknowledge it and "befriend" it instead of pushing it away as an enemy, see what this pain is a reaction to, see what the body is trying to communicate to us though the pain, where we need to pay attention.

But apart from physical pain, emotional pain is even more common. In many cases emotional pain in self-inflicted. Nobody can make us react to whatever happens in a certain way. And as many people as there are, so too the number of different reactions the very same situation will evoke. By holding on to what we did wrong, what others did wrong and so on we are prolonging emotional pain, sometimes for years or even a lifetime. We keep spinning circles in our minds. We remind ourselves of our own suffering that has already passed. A little bit of awareness of the radio constantly playing on the back of our minds goes a long way! We do have the power to notice the contents of our minds and change the radio station if necessary.
