Money in the family is constantly in short supply, and when Michael is announced to be dismissed, he is in despair. On the way back to him a beautiful girl (Vera Farmiga), who asks for a considerable sum to find one of the passengers of the train, takes a seat. Michael takes the money and almost complies with the request, but then asks his former colleague-policeman Murphy (Patrick Wilson) to check the identity of the wanted person - and is involved in a whole chain of tragic events.
