RE: How The Smartphone And The Cloud Are Killing The Planet - USB Drives Could Help Save The World

in #life7 years ago

Plastics for USB cases are a good choice.
They are long lasting and resist moisture.
It isn't something that is going to be thrown away soon.

Of all the materials, it is the best. And of all the materials, it is the cheapest in energy costs. Should you use some oil to make plastics, or use the same oil to produce electricity to run the saw to make bamboo or aluminum products?

Emails are tiny, compared to a photo. And, they have lots of information that may save you from court years down the road.
Pictures are interesting. The actual biggest cost in keeping all of them is it becomes progressively harder to find ones you want later.

Sort:

Good point - the casing might be inconsequential - but there is marketing for "green" USB keys that as far as I can tell are simply in bamboo or wood cases (probably glued with toxic stuff).

I find that so many "green" things are really just marketing ploys.

They are a net loss, not a net gain for the planet.

If people really wanted to help the planet, it comes form little stupid shit like building an aluminum can passive solar heater. Or trading out your big box computer for a little Gigabyte BRIX (going from several hundred watts down to 35)

What is the most interesting power savings in america has been going from great big tube televisions to LED/LCD flat screens tell-a-visions.

BTW: the computer is just acting as a heater. So, if you need the heat, running the computer is just as efficient a heater as any other electric heater.
