Exploring around San Francisco Bay
Ship leaving port
I was walking through Lands End at the edge of San Francisco the other day and decided to stop at the Sutro Baths. What a peaceful spot, even with the constant stream of people. I can only dream about what the baths once looked like. They burned down in 1966, but you can kind of make out their remains in the foreground of the video.
I recorded a container ship leaving the bay. Watching those giant ships always make me think about what's on them and where they are going. Maybe this one was on its 4-5 day journey to Hawaii. Or maybe it was starting it's journey all the way across the pacific to China or Japan. The world seems a lot smaller with such large machines moving around.
I also got to wondering what large boat traffic looks like on a given day in the Bay. Sam Kronick put together this interesting data visualization showing just that.
I thought there would be more of the large container ships. Also interesting to note are the little tour boats coming to and from Alcatraz Island. There were a bunch of those.
We packed up and left the baths to drive across the bridge to check out the view from the Marin Headlands.

You can make out Alcatraz in the middle of the bay under the moon in my image above. The ship passed through this spot minutes before I started recording. The Sutro Baths are on the other side of the bridge. San Francisco is visible right over the bridge with the awesome city of Oakland resting on the other side of the Bay.
The day ended with a beautiful sunset over the ocean from Mt. Tamalpais State Park.
