The Importance of the human body super series! Page 2:Thy hands
Last time we spoke about how important the leg was to us as humans, how we often neglect the legs.
Today, while it may seem cliché, we will be talking about the hands! Yes I said it, the human hands and its importance. Now many may say that this doesn’t deserve a topic, but when you think about it, on a scale of 1 - 10, how important would you say your hands are to you??
Yes, when you decide to think about it, we really need these things don’t we? The fact that I am able to write this and post it is due to the hands which I have. From typing on our laptops, phones,tablets, to riding cars, to basically anything, the hands have an important role to play in our lives.
Humanity and their hands
Just like how important the feet was in the past, the hands too were very important in the prehistoric era. Before the invention of 90% of the things around you, when man was still a hunter-gatherer type of animal.
The term hunter-gatherer meant that man lived and died hunting for animals to kill and eat, and if not doing that, went about gathering plants, fruits that could be eaten. In those times, like I said in the last post, before man discovered fire and agriculture, an injury or accident that maimed or rendered a limb useless or temporarily unavailable was something that was highly fatal. If you don’t believe take the example below;
In a world where motors and cars are unavailable, where horses, donkeys and mules are wild and non-domesticated. In a world where surviving meant having a weapon at hand to fight, having hands to pick plants that could be used for herb/food.
In a world like the one above, would you really survive without the 100% use of any of your limbs?
Those are in the past though, right now in the present that we live in, so many automated processes are available that the use of the hands have dropped by a few percent. By a few percent, I actually mean 0%!
I mean lets take a look at the past and present and see what has changed;
In the past, the hands were merely used for picking up fruits, fighting off enemies, fighting off animals, hunting food, carrying loads, baggages, climbing trees, obstacles etc and other minor things
These days, the hands are used for writing, typing, picking up items, still used for fighting off enemies, used for operating machines, cooking, planting,still used for carrying load, still used for climbing trees, obstacles etc and much more.
In fact in these years of technological advancement, ii seems that while the legs have played lesser and lesser roles in the overall way we live, the hands have taken up more tasks.
What makes your hand special
The human hands are special, we should know that the hands is located at the end of the forearm, composed of just the finger, palms.The key feature that makes the human hands special and different from the paws that other primates have is the fact that we have an opposable thumb.
Like many already know, the human fingerprint is unique to every individual, meaning no two individual can have the same fingerprint, not even twins!
Just a little over 10% of the world population are left-handed and the link of left handedness is actually a large topic on its own.
Special hand, special care
Now we take care of our hands, but they also suffer a large amount of abuse, [poor poor hands:( ]. but lest I sound like a man campaigning for the better use of the hands, I leave with the message.
Without the hands, our lives would be radically different, so take care of it!
