RE: 15 Reasons Why Learning A Foreign Language Is Good For Your Brain

in #language7 years ago

You make a very convincing case for learning a new language anthonymetivier. With Dutch being my mothertongue and living in English-speaking Canada I have definitely grown to appreciate the cultural history between these different languages as well as realize that different languages have uncanny connections where expressions in one language suddenly get seen in a different light with the context of the other language. I had heard about the Memory Palace before in one of Derren Brown's video's, definitely an interesting technique. Thanks for putting in the effort to create this educational post!

Thanks so much for this comment, Kim. Dutch is such a beautiful language and as a Canadian, I know what you're talking about. It's a great place to be for many interesting language experiences (I'm living in Australia now, but miss that about "home").

Derren Brown is a great Memory Palace practitioner. I suggest reading his book, Tricks of the Mind. He talks about memory techniques in greater detail, including using them for to-do lists.

There is also at least one video where he is speaking German too ... I couldn't find it for you, but it was interesting and he talks about using memory techniques for his law degree in different places. :)
