A Massive Tree in the Cloud Forest
On our trip to Costa Rica , we stayed a few nights in Monteverde , an area to the Northwest of Costa Rica's capital San Jose. When we were there we had a guided tour of part of the huge Cloud Forest there. On this tree our guide was explaining that the things that look like vines going up the tree , was actually a separate plant simply living on the tree , which he explained was an epiphyte. So it was just using the tree as a structure rather than living off the nutrients of the tree as a parasite would do. You can see one growing about half way up the tree on the left.
And just to get an idea of the size of this tree , here is a picture I took with the guide by the base of the tree.
