Lamin Ceesay: Using Narrative to Study Culture, Migration, and Self-Discovery
Storytelling is a bridge between cultures, experiences, and emotions. As a writer, I explore migration, identity, and self-discovery, deeply rooted in my journey and literary work. My books and blog aim to spark conversations, challenge perspectives, and share stories that might otherwise go unheard.
A Journey Across Borders
Born and raised in The Gambia, I grew up surrounded by the rich oral storytelling tradition. These narratives were more than entertainment; they preserved history, passed down wisdom, and reinforced identity. Later, moving to Milan, Italy, reshaped my understanding of migration, adaptation, and belonging. While my professional work is in the electrical industry, my passion for storytelling remains my true calling.
The Core Themes in My Writing
Migration and Identity
Migration is a life-changing experience, often misunderstood. My writing delves into the emotional challenges of leaving home, the search for identity in a foreign land, and the resilience of those who navigate new realities.
Culture and Belonging
For migrants, balancing cultural heritage with the demands of a new society is a constant struggle. My stories explore the tension between past and present, the evolving idea of "home," and the traditions that shape who we are.
Self-Discovery
Migration isn't just about moving from one place to another—it's also an inner journey. My work highlights how experiences shape identity, the conflicts of adapting to new environments, and the realization that identity constantly evolves.

Why Migration Stories Matter
Fostering Empathy
Stories help us see the world through another person's eyes. By sharing migration narratives, I hope to challenge stereotypes, highlight resilience, and encourage more profound understanding.
Changing the Narrative
Mainstream portrayals of migration often lack depth. My writing offers a more nuanced perspective, focusing on the humanity behind the statistics.
Building Connections
Storytelling brings people together. By sharing these experiences, I aim to promote cross-cultural appreciation and meaningful discussions on identity and belonging.
A Writer Balancing Work and Passion
Beyond writing, I stay engaged by listening to migrant stories, researching migration trends, and drawing from my experiences. This balance keeps my storytelling authentic and insightful.
