I made a STEEM SBD TICKER for @getlametric time - props to @emrebeyler for help, it works pretty good for [v1]

in #lametric7 years ago (edited)

Another day another strand of learning. Yesterday I deep dived into all things api endpoints, python and curl. I’m not a programmer so it took me about two or three hours to get python running with the add-on modules I needed, running python on mac with the pre-installed version is not a good starting point to develop on I found and after some permissions things got myself something working.

I wanna shout out @emrebeyler who helped me finish up on the code side of things for now for a working version of SBD — I’m gonna try and learn a bit myself and add in STEEM as well updating in a different frame which should be easy if I follow what he did, not sure if I should make a separate piece of code and run that every sixty seconds or just have one script with the same things in but it’s pretty slick, basic, but still slick that it achieves what I want to see which is the steem sbd price fast! :)

. .. and yes, I know it’s not the right logo for steem but it’s really hard to get three flashes of the logo in their because of the limitation of the pixel grid for the artwork, i need to think of a way of doing it better for sure but for now it kinda works! :)

Ooooh, so what’s all this then ..

Well the wonderful @dayleeo bought me (by complete surprise) a lametric time device, it’s this cool little self contained scrolling led system with an app, speakers, push button and well, it’s just really rad, you can add apps to it or make your own — I’ve already got the usual weather, radio, cryptocurrency and stuff running and it took less than an hour to really understand and fly the thing, really well made and the software it nice.

Of course I couldn’t stop there so I decided to dig into the example developer code and found that actually it was super easy to understand how it was doing it, it’s got two methods using poll and like a push method where you can curl to your secure token and update elements that then display on the screen. It’s got a nice developer interface too and it’s designed I think so you might have a whole row or bank of these.

video to come but reflector 3 upgrade I got for some reason is not working with my microphone right now, if I get it fixed in the next seven days I’ll put the video here — wanna show you the device, it’s pretty neat to see it working, want you to imagine a bank of these badboys! :)

I got super excited (because it’s micro usb) that I could maybe run this in the van from the road, in the dashboard, getting updates, streaming music, connected to the stereo system, maybe make some turn by turn thing, track followers and just generally get updates and notifications without having a fully fledged machine running, it just connects to a phone and to whatever internet or wifi that you have, that bit was super smooth.

yes yes, what about this steemit ticker then?

For Creators | LaMetric Time - clock for smart home and office

ok, so right now it just supports SBD because I’m learning as I go about how to put things into the right structure and I’ve had a bunch of help from steemit (all really quick I might add) as other coders have jumped in and helped when I was struggling, I got so far as you might have seen from a previous post but they really bought it home, I knew what I wanted to do and how it would happen but they know the variables, formatting and end result I was trying to get too.

And this is the thing about programming for me, I’m sure their are a bunch of ways to achieve the same thing, some hacky like and some formatted and optimised and efficient. My problem is that I would be constantly wondering if that was the RIGHT way of doing it and heading down a wormhole of discovery in the process, wasting time and losing my creative steem (sic) to get the end result — at least this way I can track back and say HOW did that work now that I know the array/variable/code that we have used to achieve the result — also, python is kinda blowing my mind about how powerful it is! :)

features to make in the next version

I’d like to work out how to use the button on the top, push notifications, add in the steem price, ability to switch that on and off in the app, a whole bunch of stuff really, heck, I’d love to work out how to maybe activate playback of our latest podcast if you hit the button on the top that would be pretty cool — who knows what you can trigger, I’m stoked to find out.

I’m getting some messages into support and I’m currently stepping through the process of setting up some cloud hosting that I can run the script in a crontab style setup that I can ssh into, I might build on that and start to look at actual development cloud platforms that I can use to run these basic scripts so I can track downloads, uptime and all that for this device, who knows I might then build up to be brave to look at the amazon echo too!

you should totally buy this device

I can see myself with a whole bank of these, especially in van life where you don’t want a full on compute but just something that can be run from a wifi signal and powered by a dedicated leisure battery that’s charged by solar, imagine a whole bank of these oh low bright settings in the front of the van hidden away at the top of the window or integrated into the sideboard which you can see when you wake every morning - great for live streams reminders, tracking instagram, youtube and twitch live views, I’m gonna have a lot of fun with this! :)

great to hear you completed it :) Considering buying one of these.

yeah pretty great right? i'd love to work together on some ideas if you are down? -- you can do loads of stuff with it. one thing i wanna tackle at some point is the audio feature/part on it.

I need to get mine first :)

we better help you do that then eh? :) i'd love to work together on some stuff if your interested, i can do graphics, video, animations etc, if we make some apps together, i help you, you help me eh? :)

wow, thanks for the huge upvote! :) I am pretty occupied with my current schedule but why not..

i don't think i'll take up much of your time as i'll try and make some of the ideas and then just ask for a bit of your time and pay you in upvotes for little sections of time :)

Mate, the logo looks just amazing, no matter if didnt looks like the original one, cause it feels like the original one, at least that cool blue lines makes u feel as that.

Plus at first i thought it was some kind of arduino thing, but seems like a totally different stuff.

Looks great mate, have a good day bdw.

thanks buddy. yeah i'm pretty pumped with it. lots more to do. i'm gonna make a whole bunch of applications for this thing! :)

That's awesome, well done. Learning how to code or just getting into the coding side of things has been on my brain for about 2 years and I have still yet to take the plunge. It just seems overwhelming. Great to hear little success stories like yours as a little motivation to get into it

yeah i kinda know how things 'work' but i just don't know the 'variables' and code bit. i guess i'll improve over time. i don't wanna be a coder as such i feel that narrows my outlook on all things in life. you know? i like the creation process and connecting this to that but i'm not anal about the code side of things! :) - thanks for the props! :)

I hear ya. when you type all this nonsense line after line and then you hit execute and you've created something that actually works, that's gotta be an amazing feeling. Just don't know if I have the patience for it

yeah it was a buzz for sure. to be honest the maker of the product give you everything you need and a nice interface to work with everything. i managed on my own to get the price from coincapmarket and then i was stuck, i could'nt work out how to 'rewrite' everything so within a few hours of posting here i had people jump in and help and script me a script and i kinda understand python a bit better now but also allowing me to move on to something else, crazy what we can learn.. .. now i've gotta get that script running in the cloud updating every minute or so and jobs a good un! :)

This is awesome. Wow, how am I just now finding you and your blog? you have a new follower. I'm going to check out your stuff now. This is awesome.

thanks man. kinda new area for me! :)

Haha, I could use one for my kitchen... To stay up to the minute round the clock ! (-:

well wait till i get my affiliate code! :) WHOA. i just got it! - http://store.lametric.com?rfsn=947677.8522e

Learning how to code create

Very good invention. I think it's helpful to us.
I wish everyone like this. Thanks bro...

So awesome seeing you dive into this love! No matter how many ideas and features I thought it could have I knew you'd get your hands dirty and make it your own- can't wait to see what you build next! <3 Merry Chrimble!!

Woww! Amazing post bro! Vote pls :)
