Before punishing Weerapuran Appu, why did Sudda punish those who tipped under 100 pounds first??😮
Puranappu was not shining like a hero. He was a man who worked like a hero. Puranappu, who hated the big men who treated the little man unjustly, once robbed the house of a white prosecutor named Dawson. This was done because the white prosecutor did not do the trial of a poor man. Puranappu did not take possession of anything looted. He distributed all his loot to the poor. But this Sri Lanka Robinhood was a big headache for the English. The British caught Puranappu and put him in jail. Puranappu escaped from the prison by removing the iron bars. Jailed again. He jumped again. After that, the British could not capture Puranappu. People did not betray Puranappu.

Although he was a hooligan to the English, Puranappu was a hero to the Sinhalese common people.
The year 1846 was a bad time for the British. Due to an epidemic disease in coffee cultivation, the income of the English government began to fall rapidly. To maintain the country's economy, the British imposed various taxes.
Those running shops, boats and carts were required to pay a tax of £1 a year to the government, a tax of 1 1/2 shillings for a gun, and a tax of a shilling for a dog.
Among these taxes, the most oppressive tax was the body tax. The male of a family had to pay a tax of 3 shillings to the government called body tax. It was very difficult for the poor villagers to find three silims. If he did not pay the body tax of 3 shillings, he had to work on the road for 6 days.
People's opposition was raging because of these taxes which exhausted the people. Among the leaders who led it, Puranappu stood out.
The poor people who were being squeezed by taxes began to gather around Puranappu. He was currently in Matale. He had two faithful and brave companions named Karo Appu and Dinis. The two of them gathered together the Puranappu people and set fire to the coffee plantations belonging to the whites around Matale.
Pooranappu, who caused serious damage to the Matale Baptist Church, broke into the Matale jail and took out the prisoners. When they attacked the inn and quarters of the whites, the whites fled. Puranappu was the leader of the city of Matale, which was finally emptied of whites.
Captain Watson, who was in charge of the English camp in Matale, froze his division and retreated to Kandy feeling extremely ashamed.
Puranappu was victorious. He was planning how to continue attacking the white man. He chose an irrigation station as a safe place to spend the night.
As night fell, his comrades in arms gathered around him and engaged in samichi. Meanwhile, Badda's Alvis and Hewa Hakuru along with seven others were occupying this safe place. There was no doubt because those people were acquaintances with Puranappu.
After many nights Puranappu separated from his companions and went to another safe rock cave to sleep. Bedda's Alvis was watching the road to Puranappu carefully.
In the dark, this is a valuable man who can fetch £100 if caught.
. Baddage Alvis did not sleep. At dawn, along with the other seven people who came with him, Puranappu slowly approached the rock cave where he was sleeping.
Puranappu is still sleeping.
The group that jumped into one pack grabbed Puranappu without leaving any room to move. They tied it tight with vines.
Captain Watson, who had fled to Kandy, jumped up and laughed at this news. The gang of nine brought Puranappu to Kandy dreaming of the huge prize of one hundred pounds.
But something else happened.
"If our leader betrayed us, we will be betrayed at some point. The ruler of Kandy, Sudda Beddage, ordered Alvis and Hewa Hakuru to be taken into custody.
That was the reward for the traitors.
The trial against Puranappu was very short. The whites did not want to try the cases, but to end Puranappu quickly.
"You have helped Puranappu in the war. The punishment for that is that you two will be exiled from the country for fourteen years..."
Court Martial Chief Major Aµa. Lushington gave the first sentence to Beddage Alvis and Hewa Hakuruge, who caught Puranappu for £100.
Lushington next turned to Puranappu.
"Do you have one last thing to say..."
"If my mother had killed ten more people like me, she would not have allowed non-whites to own an inch of land in this country..."
As soon as Puranappu said that, the leader of the court-martial shouted, "Shoot him."
Shots were fired immediately. Puranappu turned towards the Talada palace, bowed down and fell dead.
At the age of 36, a hero who fought for the freedom of Sri Lanka met his end.
The English had respect for this young hero. The Matale Cemetery of the British was established within MacDowell Fort. The British have been kind enough to place the corpses of eleven people who were shot and killed with him in a row and put them on the surface as memorials. The third stone in the row of stones is placed on Puranappu's grave. Puranappu's grave can still be seen in Amatale cemetery today.
The other duty has been fulfilled by the Department of Archaeology. A Puranappu monument has been set up by the Department of Archeology in the small village of Wariyapola, off the main road of Matale, Kandy. This monument is believed to have been erected at the spot where Puranappu was greedily captured for 100 pounds.
