I see fools who support the idea of the U.S. annexing Canada without even considering the details.

Unless the U.S. is foolish, it is naturally in its best interest to undervalue the assets of any country it takes over. (Trump is a smart man.) Based on what Trump has revealed so far, those who support annexation at this stage are being naïve.

During the annexation process, the Canadian dollar would become worthless, and pensions that have been paid into, free healthcare, partially free pharmaceutical insurance, and personally invested assets would largely disappear. The long-standing Anglo-French tensions in Canada could also reignite.

Historically, before being fully integrated as a state, a territory could remain in a transitional status (as was the case with Hawaii). This means that Canadians could be treated as second-class citizens, with no right to elect federal lawmakers or the president for a certain period—or even permanently (as in Puerto Rico’s case). The lack of voting rights may not seem significant, but it essentially means a lack of rights altogether.

Furthermore, after annexation, the U.S. could restrict Canada’s industrial structure (as it did with Cuba) or even divide its territory as needed (as seen in the Colombia-Panama case).

역사적 사례를 보면 정식 주로 승격 전까지 준주체제로 유지될 수 있으며 (하와이 사례) 이는 캐나다인은 2등 시민권자로 미국 연방의원이나 대통령을 선출할 권리가 일정기간 또는 영원히 없을 수 있다는 것이다. (푸에르토리코 사례.) 참정권이 없다는 게 잘 와닿지 않겠지만, 참정권이 없다는 건 권리도 없다는 의미다.

또한 합병 향후에는 산업 구조를 제한하거나(쿠바 사례), 필요에 따라 영토를 분할 (콜롬비아-파나마 사례)할 수도 있다.
