Sock Making Again - 12 June 2025

in #knitting2 days ago (edited)

This second sock has taken much longer than anticipated. The knitting started back in March and has been interrupted along the way by a number of more pressing activities, but I’m glad to report that it’s finally done.

The photo above just shows you part of the process where I’ve completed the heel and I’m beginning to knit the foot of the sock. The knitting as such doesn’t take that long. Making time to just just pick up the needles has been a bit of a slow process.

When I get to this final stage which is closing up the toes by sewing with the dreaded Kitchener stitch I normally start thinking about what I’d like to make next.

When I finished doing that sewing I turned the sock inside out to weave in and hide the yarn tail. I wasn't so keen on the toe shape. Normally I’d finish with around 18 stitches altogether ( 9 stitches for the front needle and 9 for the back needle), but this time I thought it might be good to finish with 32 stitches altogether. That means that I grafted 16 stitches on the front and 16 on the back. My thinking was that perhaps that would make the toe end a bit rounder and more comfortable. Sadly this made the toe section look a bit too ‘square’. I’ll try on these socks and see how I feel. I would not be able to unpick that section because I wouldn’t know how - that Kitchener stitch is unforgiving. After such a long time I still feel I’m learning and refining my socks.

Let me now show you what the finished pair of socks looks like :

I haven’t managed to 3-D print the sock blockers yet so that’s the cardboard blockers.

You can see how the two socks are similar but not identical. When I started the second sock I tried to find a black section to begin the cuff with. I was happy I got that and thought that from then on the colours would coincide but as you can see they didn’t. The second sock had that extra black ring in the sock ‘leg’ section. I don’t mind the lack of symmetry so much because once again I will wear these socks. I currently think that I need about 9 pairs of socks in rotation so I’ll make a couple more pairs in preparation for the autumn.

Thank you so much to @marito74 and to @blessedlife for inviting me to read their inspiring posts about what they’ve made and highlighting events happening around the world. It's nice to be included and to feel part of a community.

I love to see you take up your crochet content, I want all my friends to do it and share these beautiful experiences, your socks are beautiful, right @sammy1109, @analp, @naka05, @blessedlife 🤗💕.

I'm about to make some, I saw some on Instagram made of grannies, but you know I have a weakness for purses, bags and like them that's why I show more pieces like that.

Thanks for the mention I love that you are back, long live crochet,of course it does,it unites us from different parts of the world ,a hug 🤗 💕.

Thank you @marito74. I've seen socks with granny squares : I look forward to seeing what you make !

Greetings. I'm glad you finally had time to finish this pair of socks. I noticed they weren't identical before you mentioned it, and I actually thought it was a lovely touch, haha.

I hope the toe feels comfortable. Use this momentum to knit the next pair, which I'd love to see too.

Thank you for sharing the community feeling of knitting lovers.

😁 I'll be able to tell the right from the left sock @blessedlife! Thanks for your comment.

Upvoted! Thank you for supporting witness @jswit.

Hi, I'm so glad your socks are finished! They are not the same but in my opinion that makes them much cuter and unique!!!, I am still trying to make a set with filet crochet, keep in mind that I am making the “simplest” designs, but at least I have half ready...of the top of course👍 hundred years' war crochet version 😓.
