Harshest response’ to Pahalgam assault
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed that those responsible for the Pahalgam attack "will face the harshest response."
Meanwhile, the Indian army has accused Pakistan of initiating "unprovoked" firing along the Line of Control — the de facto border dividing Kashmir. Pakistan has not yet responded to the allegations.
On Saturday, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for an independent investigation into the April 22 attack that left 26 people dead. India has accused Pakistan of supporting cross-border "terrorism," a charge Pakistan denies.
In response to the attack — the deadliest targeting civilians in two decades — India has taken several measures, including downgrading diplomatic relations with Pakistan and suspending its participation in the crucial Indus Waters Treaty.
Experts say the attack has undermined the Indian government's narrative of restoring normalcy in the Muslim-majority region. In 2019, New Delhi revoked Kashmir’s limited autonomy and placed the region under direct federal control — a move that has further deepened local resentment.
