In Japan it's off the beaten path where the most delicious food lies. Behold the Awaji burger!
Have you ever craved a burger so badly, you cancelled your entire days plans just to have one? I did!
From this photo, you can probably see why I needed to eat one immediately. In fact, I ordered two burgers because they were sold out of their famous onion rings!
This restaurant’s location is not easy to find, as only locals and hamburger aficionados seem to know about Awaji Burger. It is situated in Nishinomiya City, between Osaka and Kobe.
The joint’s owner is actually an onion farmer from nearby Awaji Island that had the brilliant idea to open a burger shack. His specialty is the onion compote, a savoury sauce that is spread generously on the beef patties, giving them a distinct flavor.
Outside the shop, you'd never know they make one of the best hamburgers in Japan. The place really looks like a storage shed, or maybe an abandoned hovel! But from the menu, there are hints that this is a specialty restaurant — they only sell one type of burger, with fries or onion rings on the side. Nothing else!
Unfortunately, if you want to eat outside, there’s no place to chow down near the shop, as it’s located in a warehouse district. So my two friends and I hopped on our motorbikes and rode to the beach.
What a great setting to eat some burgers!
After eating, we all agreed the day was over. Thus, our planned trip to the mountains that afternoon was cancelled, as all we wanted to do was to lie down and digest the food.
Here’s two of the three bikes we rode. (The third bike is just out of view, but I was too stuffed to push it into the shot.)
Now that the weather is finally warming up, I’ll be riding more often to visit other great places to eat around Japan.
