Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti (Forgive us our debts)
Having a soft spot for all things Italian I had to watch the first ever Italian movie released on Netflix.
Rimetti a noi i nostri debiti, directed by Antonio Morabito, translates into "Forgive us our debts" and was released on may 4th, 2018.
The movie is about Guido, a guy who decides to work for his debt collector for free because he can't pay off his own debts. As such the movie deals with the socio economic problems stemming from a debt based economic model. Unfortunately the film deals with this grave issue, which I care deeply about, only in a superficial manner.
In the film we just see a series of people being bullied into paying their debts. The economics behind the debt industy aren't clearly explained nor do we get a meaningful insight into the social circumstances that led people to become over indebted. This is a missed opportunity because as a result the film fails to make a clear hard statement against the practices of the loan shark industry.
Despite its superficialness I enjoyed watching the movie. It even moved me at times. It is in my opinion beautifuly filmed, well acted and lovers of clasical music will find the music heavenly.
In the end the film succeeded in fulfilling my need for an Italian fix. However, it nowhere near reaches the level of Italian series/movies like La meglio gioventù or Le cose che restano.
