I'm venturing to guess the original Aramaic was a tad different than has been translated, but that is far more in line with the rest of his teachings than literally extolling followers to hate (which is in direct opposition to “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (Matt 5:12)
