😣 NC Teacher struggling to find.....
All of the above?!
Hey yall!
My name is Kayla and I am super excited to be on steemit with all of you!!
I was born and raised in North Carolina, and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill last May. Go Heels!!!! I Majored in Global Studies and have a double minor in Social Justice and Spanish. Basically, this just means I studied cultural and political movements from all over the world, mostly focusing on Latin American countries.
College was fun and I have so many memories and stories to share! Make sure you follow to read all about it in the days and weeks to come.
My 9 - 5.... Well, more like 5 - 4 😳
In the final semester of my senior year at Carolina, I was beginning to panic. I needed to find a job!!! UNC is full of achievers, and it seemed like everyone had the best connections and knew who to talk to when it came to networking and job hunting. I am a very competitive person, so I wasn't going to graduate without a job. And not just any old job. No. I wanted a job that actually meant something to my community and to myself. I wanted to change the world! Furthermore, I wanted a nice salary with benefits.
I applied for Teach for America because I felt like it would provide me with that sense of achievement and security I was so craving post Carolina, plus I knew it would give me a chance to fight for social justice in my own home state. I just finished my first year teaching as a high school English teacher.......
It has been a ROLLERCOASTER of a year and I am still processing it all. Thank god I am on summer break right now, because I felt like I was going to die. First year teaching is HARD, especially at the age of 22. I was teaching seniors....some were just a few years younger than me. I could go on forever about this, so expect more post about my 1st year teaching experience in North Carolina with TFA!
The Whole Famn Damily
When I am not in my classroom (Or hiding in the teachers' lounge), I am spending time with my husband and 2 pets. I have a dog named Dino, and a Cat named Chula. Oh, and my husband is named Ivan. They make life worth living, so of course I will be writing about all the fun misadventures we have 🐾 🌵❤️
My family is mega dysfunctional and fractured due to several divorces, so I spend the majority of the time with Ivan and his very large, very loud, Mexican family. It is through his family that I have come to love Mexican culture. Everything about the traditions, history, and especially la comida excites me!!! I will be posting a ton about all of this, so follow, follow, follow!
What does the future hold?? 🔮
I am not 100% sure and that is really stressing me out, to be honest. I am such a planner and the fact that I don't have my life planned out is killing me. I have firmly decided that I am NOT cut out to be a k-12 teacher in the NC public schools system, but I do have dreams of being a college professor someday. I am also super interested in immigration law, and perhaps will go back to law school next year....
Who knows? Maybe I will become a whale one day and never have to worry about it 😜
Until then,

Thanks for the heads-up!
First, welcome to steemit!
Why do you think you are not cut out to be a teacher? Is it the lousy salary? The time it takes? Is it not the place to change the world like you thought it would be?
It's cool to see you found a husband that you can feel like you are part of a family. Your furbabies are adorable too.
Thank you!
It is a combination of many things. I will write a post about it soon! It is challenging on so many levels-- the pay, the students, the workload, the lack of support.... the list goes on and on.....
I am very grateful to have my little family! They have my back!
Glad to have you on board! Keep them coming!
thanks, Spacehead! I appreciate the well wishes!
