A huge tip I have been giving people is to make meaningful comments, especially to those in the 'hot' or 'active' category, because those posts have a high chance of making the front page of trending.
To reach these just go to steemit.com/hot/ or steemit.com/active/, as you can filter by hot, but not by active without the URL
