I love this competition, but I feel its going to give me a huge case of 'coast envy.' For now, I can act like number 4, just without the hammock.

Is this the river wave in Germany?
Yeah man, in Munich. Check out my blog, I've got a few posts about it but if you wanna see a video of it: Surf the River (A Video of the Surfers of Germany)
The water must be freezing!
The wave is called the Eisbachwelle which is the Ice creek wave, and it certainly is freezing. In the middle of summer the water temperature knocks the breath out of you.
I would be there in the hammock! Can't help thinking what a great work out you get in the river though
It certainly looks like it! I unfortunately don't have a board so can't join the fun just yet. The second river wave is a little calmer and looks like less of a workout. I definitely will be starting there.
Just standing there and doing some turns is more riding than most places all day
And there is no paddling!
it's funny in a way. Most of the places i surfed i had to paddle non stop against currents to stay lined up and only caught a few waves. This is almost the opposite in a way that you get super strong legs and not much paddling
Its also great for practicing turns and just control in general without the exhaustion that comes with paddling... especially after being out of the water for so long.
How often does the spot work? I bet it needs a lot of water flow to get it going. I still can't get over the hammock :)
Its continuous, and consistent all year round except for a week or two when they drain and clean the canal. Its diverted from the main river, which is all water from the mountains so water isn't an issue!
As for the hammock, he definitely has prime position, that's for sure.
