The "Link in bio" paradigm, and why I stopped using LinkTree

in #internet6 years ago
For those of you that don't know it, Linktree is a third party way of giving you the chance to present your Instagram followers several links to showcase your work. This service exists because Instagram only lets you have one link on your profile. And that is why everyone directs people to their "link in bio". This is a great idea and a useful service, don't get me wrong. But after a while of using it I realized that I wasn't really giving my followers the experience I wanted them to have.

This was how my Linktree connection looked like:

I was using the free version, and as you can see I got the Linktree logo in the bottom, I had limited background and button functionalities, I was driving traffic to a third party website instead of driving it to me, and what was really bothering me is that I wasn't really communicating my brand and my image the way I wanted.

The solution

In about 30 minutes (or less) I found and put in practice the solution with no cost (other then those 30 minutes). In my website I have my identity, my pictures, my colors, my symbols. And I want that my followers get the same experience when visiting my profile link on instagram that they have when visiting the website. Of course I could just put the website address in there and that's ok. But if you strategically use a few links you can direct people quicker to what you want them to go to and you will always get more results. A new musical release, a new blog post, a new picture, a promotion, an event, a new item...In my case I want people to be able to listen to my music on whatever streaming platform they fancy, and and I can easily throw in a new button to promote an event for example. So if you already have a website it's super easy to create a subdomain and just insert there the links that you want your followers to have access to. You keep your identity and the traffic doesn't go elsewhere. You have total control over the information you put there. In my case I created a subdomain called about.soundphaser.pt. I threw in the links I want, and keep the integrity of my communication. Chose the background image to keep it consistent with the website, and kept the logo.

It also important to know a little HTML and CSS to be able to do it yourself, but believe me it's no big deal! If you are able to make a nice looking post here on Steemit you are already qualified!

This is how it looks like now when you click the link on my Instagram bio:

Of course if you don't have your own domain, or if you just don't want to bother, Linktree is still a functional solution. But I advise you to consider my approach. I am definitely happy with my decision, and I am sure the image you pass on to your followers will be much more professional and consistent.

Happy to share this with you, and hope I could help you somehow!
