HiHealth: using AI to make the world healthier
Delayed analysis and other diagnostic errors are more common, costly and detrimental than any other patient’s safety threat. While data on delayed prognosis is lacking, diagnostic errors typically is one of the six leading reasons of death in the United States. They affect most Americans at least once in their lives and make a contribution to about 90,000 deaths annually. Primary care is mainly accountable to delayed diagnosis.
Internationally, leading organisations are calling for dramatic strengthening of the evidence base about the causes of and solutions to delayed diagnosis and various diagnostic errors. However, delayed prognosis is challenging to measure and has so far primarily been viewed an individual failure rather than an organizational or device problem. There is a lack of consensus on the definition of diagnostic error reflecting the complexity of the diagnostic process. It is essential to acknowledge and tackle this diversity in terminology to permit comparisons between research and development in this area of patient safety research. The scarcity of complete diagnostic safety measurement equipment is accompanied via usual omission of delayed diagnosis from patient safety policies. Research techniques that have so far been used for the analyses of diagnostic blunders including evaluation of malpractice claims, autopsies, surveys, case reviews and incident reporting. These techniques center of attention at a chosen pattern of diagnostic blunders are backward-looking, i.e. they expose damage that has already manifest. Furthermore, it is essential to be aware that decreasing delayed diagnosis in cutting-edge medicine comes with a chance of overdiagnosis which can lead to severe damage due to unnecessary therapy or unnecessary diagnostic tests.
