Latino Support for ICE: Accountability and Reform Can Coexist

in #iceraids9 days ago

As a Latino, I believe in upholding the law—immigration laws included. While I support immigration reform that is fair, humane, and provides pathways to legal residency and citizenship, I also support ICE’s role in enforcing the laws we currently have. It troubles me to see protests against ICE raids, especially when they turn violent or disruptive. These actions, in my view, send the wrong message: that breaking the law should be met with sympathy rather than accountability.

I understand that many immigrants come to the U.S. seeking better lives, often escaping dire circumstances. But there must still be a level of personal responsibility. Protesting ICE in a way that defends undocumented status—without addressing legal solutions—makes it seem as if accountability is feared or rejected within our community.

It’s not anti-Latino to expect our community to follow the rules, just as others must. Reform and enforcement should go hand in hand. We can push for better policies while still respecting the structure that allows our nation to function. Standing for lawful processes doesn't make me less proud of my heritage—it shows I want a stronger, more respected future for all Latinos in America.
