How Ireland has failed millennials.

in #housing6 years ago

I didn't have to think for too long about what my first post would be as this is something that I and many other young Irish people are facing. Since 1990, Ireland has not just grown from a population of 3.5 million to 4.8 million and with the population of Dublin expected to grow by as much as 500,000 in the next thirty years I can't see how it will ever be solved in my lifetime.

How long will there be a housing crisis? I predict at least another generation. it takes many years/decades to see the results of strategic planning. Given that we haven't even started yet, I don't expect the situation to resolve itself any time soon. Why not just rent you say? part of the problem is also the renting situation in Ireland you cannot own a pet in these rented properties (least of my worries) and rents are exorbitant.

Lately in Dublin people posted shared listing's on various letting sites with some people asking for as much as €600 euro a month to share not only a room with somebody but also a bed! So basically you will be living with up to ten other people just to live in the capital. The average price for a second-hand house in 1988 Ireland would have cost a buyer £39,892. 30 years on, the average house price across Ireland stands at roughly €254,000. At first glance, this represents an increase of over 536%.

So what are the immediate arguments used to justify this astronomical increase? inflation? Well, of course, there's been significant inflation over the last 30 years. A healthy economy is always inflating.

According to the Central Statistics Office, £39,892 would be worth €74,711.20 in today's money. So it might look like we have a lot more money these days, the figures actually haven't even doubled. In that same time, house prices have increased more than six times over. House prices have gone up by 537%.

I could continue with this topic for day's but this post is basically just to introduce my self and also get this off my chest. I hope someday to return to Ireland but at the moment it just doesn't make sense to.
