Chick Update
My kids and I have been so excited to see our 12 chicks thriving and growing. We tend to them with loving care, and love listening to their little chirps. We particularly fell in love with the odd ball, "Little Chicken Little". He is the one chick that's colored different than the rest. He's full Buff Orphington whereas the other 11 where half Buff and half Silver-Laced Wyndottes.
My junior rooster, "Chicken Little" must have had a secret tryst with the hen when the boss wasn't looking...
But Nature doesn't care about a child's love... It is callous and indifferent.
Unfortunately, disaster struck in the middle of the night. A opossum was able to infiltrate the chicken coop and killed half of my chicks, including the one we liked so much. I later trapped the opossum, but the damage had been done.
However, like all things in life we carry on. Momma hen is doing really well and watches over her six chicks all day long. She spends most of her day on the outskirts of the barn showing the chicks how to scratch for food. They are growing fast and now have wing and tail feathers. We are pretty excited to see the coloring of these guys as they grow.
Predation is always sad :(
Luckily, you caught the possum, so that problem is taken care of.
Good luck with the chicks!
Thanks!
