The Great AMERICAN Chicken Roast - WOOD FIRED PIZZA OVEN!

SEE BELOW ON HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN OVEN!

Our wood fired pizza oven is an amazing tool for outdoor cooking year round. I highly recommend building one and if you are good at scrounging, you may even be able to find many of the components cheap online at places like Craigslist. The one area you don't want to skimp however is the fire rated morter and inside firebricks. The outside bricks can be what are called pavers. But the inside bricks need to be fire rated bricks.

We have used our wood fired pizza oven for all kinds of foods over the last 4 years. And I'm sure we have gotten more use out of our oven than most who build them.

What we have used our oven for:

  • Pizza (of course, makes the best pizza ever)
  • Bread
  • Chickens
  • Turkeys
  • Roasted Pumpkins
  • Roasting Sunflower Seeds

After 4 years, we are still using our oven and its still going strong. However, the outside mortar is cracking and coming apart. This is because we should have used a fire mortal for these bricks as well. We also probably should have coated the entire oven with a very good weather protectant.

To date, none of the bricks have cracked which is a really good sign that the oven is still structurally sound. Probably in the spring or next summer, we will try to attempt repairs on the outside mortal damage.

TODAY: CHICKENS!
We are going to roast some chickens. Trust me, you could cook an old tire in this oven and after it's finished, it will taste delicious! First we get our birds ready and in the oven! Boom! Nice spices and just look at how excited those birds are about getting into that oven!

In the oven the birds go. The wood fire and smoke are going to make these birds taste amazing! They will roast about 45 minutes and I will keep the door on the oven the entire time. About 20 minutes in, I will rotate the birds. They will be happily sizzling in their own juices and won't mind a bit being disturbed. :)

And just like that! They are done! They may look a bit crisp on the outside but don't let that fool you. Inside they are juicy and and jumping for flavorful joy! The wood smoke has imparted a flavor to them that can never be achieved any other way and once you try it, you will not be able to wait on building an oven for your homestead!

BUILD A PIZZA OVEN

Yes you can build your own pizza oven just like this one.
I would recommend that you purchase the foam template from BRICK WOOD PIZZA OVENS

Once you purchase the template and build your inner structure, you can be as artistic as you want with the over all oven. We stayed simple with ours but you can see some people really go wild!

Brick Wood Pizza Ovens also provides the PDF template with very detailed color instructions for assembly! Yes you can do this!

Do you have a pizza oven? We know some of you do because we have seen the photos on Steemit before! Comment below and share any pics in the comment section that you have. HAPPY COOKING!

Thank you for sharing what looks like a very doable oven! Since you have used it for pizza, may I ask if you have successfully cooked bread? Finding good bread plan for a grid-down is my next project. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful accomplishments and ideas, we are going to have to do that more and more, it seems.

Yes, we have baked a lot of bread in there. Yeast bread seems to work the best but with enough practice, you could do sourdough very successfully I'm sure.

Thanks for your reply, very much appreciated. Good Luck with your endeavors.

How is it with matzah

That looks amazing. Love watching all your American Homestead videos. An early Shabbat Shalom to you and your family.

Okay, now I want some of that chicken for lunch! I'm definitely going to try to convince my wife to add this to our patio area...maybe with a grilling addition on the side to do steaks on!

Mmnn..your chickens look amazing!! I need a pizza oven like this on my little homestead. That's the BEST way to cook..via wood :)

I have loved this oven since you first shared it! And the foods that Jaimie brings out of it look so tasty!

I think they look a little more than a bit crisp haha! But I will take your word for it. It would be really handy to have one of those ovens though!

those chickens are GORGEOUS - and the drumsticks are HUGE! good grief i would love to chow down on those after a morning in the garden.

thanks for the links, too!
