Salted Caramel Latte

This salted caramel latte is quick and easy to make. Sweet caramel with the salty crunch of sea salt blends perfectly with hot espresso for a coffee house drink right at home!

Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved lattes. Gas station lattes. The kind that came out of the machines that sat next to the coffee pots.

Full of sugar and chemicals, but so tasty. So warming, so inviting. Especially on a cold wintry day. I can still smell it, the caramely scent rising above the cardboard cup.

Of course, there has been a step up with the rise in coffee shops. You can get a delicious latte, with frothed milk, caramel syrup, and fresh espresso. At a dollar a syllable, it's not really affordable for most of us. Next best thing, a homemade caramel latte.

What kind of coffee should I use in this?

While it's best to have strong espresso, due to the steamed milk being added, you can also use regular brewed coffee. French press coffee, where you allow it to brew in a press, then filter the grounds as you pour also has great results. This is due to the oils in the coffee remaining, and allowing the full flavor to come through.

You can also used cold brewed coffee, where you place coffee grounds and water in a mason jar, and store in the fridge overnight. Filter the grounds the next morning, then heat the coffee to use. Because you are adding caramel syrup to this, I would not recommend flavored coffee. Plain coffee is best.

What kind of milk should I use?

I used regular milk and a milk frother for this recipe. (affiliate link) However, if you want to make it dairy free you can try:

  • coconut milk
  • almond milk
  • soy milk

Do I need to use a milk frother for a homemade latte?

Well, to be perfectly honest, NO. You do not need to have frothed milk. Although frothed milk is the "trademark" of this coffee house drink, you can make a latte at home without it. Simply heating milk in a saucepan or microwave and pouring into the coffee will work just fine.

Instructions:

  1. Place the milk and caramel sauce in a jar that has a lid. With the lid removed, microwave the milk for about 1 minute or until hot and the caramel has melted.
  2. Place the lid of the jar and shake vigorously for 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour into a large mug, add in the coffee or espresso and stir.
  4. Top with whipped cream, caramel sauce, and a sprinkle of sea salt and serve.

I was just thinking..."I could go a caramel latte right now." This virtual one, whilst very tasty looking, will not sate my craving though.
