yeh its called a Canadian Mill or a Chainsaw mill. They are really handy. I'd love one myself to make my own slabs.
What part of NZ are you in? I'm in Brisbane personally so can't really be of much help to you in that endevour lol

Cool mate, yeah I've been there 3 times on holidays, I love the South Island. We have seriously considered moving the family over there. The only thing that stopped us was the lack of jobs.
Oh and its full of bloody Kiwis hahahah
