What I would do with $50 SBD

in #homesteading7 years ago (edited)

When it comes to otherwise unaccounted for money, I have three main go-to's.

  1. Long term investment, as in silver.
  2. Long term savings, as in change for change, aka our savings for our next homestead.
  3. Preparedness, be it livestock, food, guns, etc..

Upon long reflection, I think I have come up with a use to put this prize to that may in a round-about way hit upon all three of these. If we were to win this contest, I would put the money toward the building of a much needed second rabbit cage. Our rabbits are ready to breed and the male is itching for combat.

I'll try to cram our reasoning into a nutshell.

Our rabbits are housed in our underground green house. They help to heat it in the winter, so the more the better.
Rabbits are profitable, especially since our male is a pure-bred angora. Fingers crossed for a few like fared descendants! A new cage will aid to the operation and thus will help with the savings needed to get our next homestead.

They also live for up to 12 years and since we bought an angora male, any descendants we don't sell or butcher, who carry his angora blood, will be kept for their wool. Thus becoming a long-term investment.

Lastly, as stated above, we will butcher some for meat. The ability to do this is a prep that would be invaluable in times of long term disaster. Should we win, we will do a post on how we build the cages.

Thanks for the contest. It is a hard one, but well worth it. (Contest at: greenacrehome)

hope you don't mind this post unless it's to make sure folks are reading from start to finish :) as I do this in chats now and then :D these rabbits I understand live a long life and you have life in place of live and it would be interesting to see how wood is collect from these type of bunnies :D Hope it's not too late for you to edit if you don't wan't these mistakes there :) great read nice investment thinking good luck in the contest :) ps I hope you still do a post all the same seeing as you need a new cage :D

Wow, don't mind me for picking out a minor detail: You're heating the greenhouse with the rabbits? That's amazing! What a great idea. Immediate questions that come to mind are: what about the oxygen at night? Do the bunnies have enough to breathe? Also, I suppose they are kept apart from the food growing there. Okay, sorry for the off-topic questions. Nice posts and awesome pics!

They help heat it yes, every animal (and human) puts off some heat, that coupled with many other factors make for a energy free green house. As for oxygen even if it was as sealed as a ziplock bag...(its not though haha) its big enough and we go in enough that it would take days to run out, (and thats without plants). The rabbits are housed under the shelves me set out plants on..

A post on this is on the list but might wait till winter so all can see it in action.

Nice! So I'll wait for it with the rest of my questions.

Great post! Thank you.
