We made biochar by burning a bunch of fallen twigs, branches, and some small logs. Then before they burn up to ash, you water em. We collected the biochar and carried it out to our field where we’ll be tilling one last time before planting our tomatoes. We've done that too! We used a small barrel inside a large one. The small one has the stuff you want to turn to biochar. You build a fire in the space between them and put a tight lid on it with a chimney to let the gases out. It worked really well. We sprinkled the biochar in the chicken yard, which helped the smell. The charcoal soaked up all the nitrogen in the fresh chicken poop. Then we tilled it into the garden where it will slowly release the nitrogen without burning the plants. Super cool.
No way!!!! I have lots of chicken manure. We are converting a hay farm to veggie farm, and the soil is very lacking. The ground sinks when you walk on it because it has no organic matter or structure. So we essentially are building the soil from nothing. We ordered compost to put on it, but when they dumped the compost, it smelled awful, only then did we find out its human compost. Like from septic waste. And I just can't! So we changed tactics, and are letting that compost sit, and trying to build this other up.
Gross! Seems like they should have told you that before they dropped it off! It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. I'll be interested to hear how it's going.
