I have finally decided on how I am going to write my blog

in #homestead7 years ago (edited)

I haven't written for quite a while because I have been a little stuck in my thoughts. I guess that's what you call writers block. I was bouncing all over with my thoughts and writing so I stopped until it came clear. When I first signed up for steemit I proclaimed myself as a homesteader, stay at home, family oriented, home schooler mom. What I have found in some of my writings was I was becoming a little negative in the topics I was choosing instead of sharing my life like I had intended to. So here goes it I hope that my crazy fun loving life can bring a smile or two to someones face or when I am sharing educational stuff maybe I can share some ideas that may help someone. So please don't give up on me as I readjust my way of doing this.
Chick is in the hatching stage
So what is the newest thing on my homestead that is awing me right now. Well I think the miracle of life with chickens. Right now I have one very broody chicken sitting on a clutch of eggs and I had and I say had another one who sat on her eggs way up top of my horse hay. She had been sitting there for about 2.5 weeks and then decided she was bored jumped down and walked away to go hang with her man rooster again. Lucky enough for me my son being a lizard raiser and lover had bought himself an incubator. So he quickly set up the incubator and the eggs were moved into it. Not knowing if this was going to actually work we took a chance. With being a lizard incubator there was no settings on it to regulate the humidity and we were using an old fashioned thermometer to watch the heat. Also on top of all that when we found the eggs they were quite cold. The chances were they were not going to hatch. We waited for a week and nothing happened. Two days ago as I was making my morning coffee I decided I was going to throw the eggs out. As I was waiting for the coffee to perk I heard a chirp. At first I thought it must have been the birds that were flitting around outside my window. Then I heard another one. I went outside to see if any of my young chickens had come up on my deck there was none. So I went back inside and heard another chirp but this time it was a peep. I looked into the incubator to see if that was where the sound was coming from and amazing their was a baby chick working itself out of its egg. I called the kids over and we got to watch the miracle of a chicken coming into this world. It was amazing and so educational. They call that project learning to the highest now in school. The chick was so cute stumbling all over the place all wet and clumsy. But within hour this little chick dried off and became very sure footed. So tiny and helpless but also so strong at the same time. I left her in the incubator for 24 hours but the humidity was too high for her. It was so sad but so cute the way she walked around and knocked on the other eggs as if saying wake up siblings come out and play with me. We had another egg start but unfortunately that one didn't make it.
So after some serious thought of what I was going to do with the chick as I have a nursery with other chicks in it I didn't have a brooder to transfer her to. I went out to the coop grabbed a hold of her mother and said to her its time to take responsibility. My daughter thought I had gone crazy, my husband figured the hen would kill the chick before the night was through but I was determined. I put both of them in a box put the chick under her and turned off the lights. At first it did not go well. The mom pecked at the baby and for a short while I figured my husband might be right. So I prayed with my daughter over the two of them and said let nature be nature. We have no choice I have no other place for her. The next morning I woke up and tentatively checked on them and sure as heck mommy was a very protective mom and the baby a very content chick. I won one thank you God for the instincts you put in animals.
Poppy and her baby Hero
As for the other eggs I hear peeping from the eggs and see movement so I may be able to add to the flock if not atleast we got one beautiful little chick that my kids named Hero.
The eggs that are left unfortunately in a mess thanks to our little Hero
