turning 100 years old in style
The LA Phil turned 100 and threw a party for 18,000 special guests. John Williams conducted his well loved Star Wars music, Herbie Hancock took us back to the 80's, and Katy Perry wowed the audience with Fireworks.
I had planned for a quiet weekend: attend a dancers body conditioning workshop and stay in bed anticipating the class would knock me down. I found the tickets to attend the concert Friday after coming home from teaching. R had left them at my door. Unable to attend, he wrote a note to enjoy them with friends.
My weekend plans instantly puffed up.
I managed keeping up with the dance class which spent the bulk of time on technique to care for one's body to prevent and to recover from injury. It felt good to reconnect with my favorite flamenco teacher and be affirmed that I had been making wise decisions in caring for my post car accident body. I found myself doing many of the same exercises my physical therapist had me doing.
I was one out of two dancers new to the established class. As much as I was concerned about physically moving, I was more wary of how I would be accepted as a new face. The teacher was keen to smooth the path and introduced us saying we will experience a 5 minute gap as we take time to learn the choreography. I happily did not embarrass myself. It felt soooooo good to dance again. Stylistically, flamenco is my favorite style to dance. It makes you feel strong and proud. It was a great workout.
My happiness wore itself on my face for the rest of the day. My friends and I arrived to the Hollywood Bowl and were right away enthralled by the sounds of the LA Phil Orchestra. The audience was invited to download an app that would include us in the visual light show. Flashes of color danced among the audience.
Jaime Camil who plays Rogelio in Jane The Virgin was emcee of the night. Love him! The tone of the evening was sweet, funny and grateful. How else would one celebrate 100 years???
The evening was full of wows. Wow for the LA Phil, Herbie Hancock, John Williams and the most impressive fireworks show I've seen at the Hollywood Bowl. Katy Perry sang "Fireworks". Here's to another happy 100 years!
