A Step by Step Guide on How to Prepare "Simple" Pap.
Preparing Pap for Breakfast
If you're a student in a hostel and haven’t made pap at least once, are you even in the system? 😂 Today, I went for the OG energy booster — not the regular soft akamu, but that special dry mix pap made with guinea corn, millet, soybeans, fried groundnut, and dates.
Now listen, pap might seem simple — and yeah, it is... but only if you know what you’re doing. If not, you either end up with a watery mess or enough lumps to start a rock collection 😅.
And I say this from experience oh. I used to be one of those amateurs that always messed up the pap. My mum — God bless her patience — would still have me prepare it for the whole family’s breakfast even after I’d spoil it once, twice, three times. The laughs, the taunts, the side eyes from everybody in the house? 😂 You go learn by force. But it’s because of that "training" that I can confidently prepare clean, smooth pap now. So when I say it looks “simple” but it’s not really simple for newbies, trust me, I’ve been there.
That’s why this post is more than just food gist — I’m showing you how to do it step-by-step so your own turns out smooth and satisfying.
Let’s Begin;
Ingredients
The pap I used is not the regular fermented one (akamu), but a dry powdered mix that:
- Lasts long without getting spoilt
- Is packed with nutrients
- Easy to store and prepare in the hostel
What’s inside the mix?
✔ Guinea corn
✔ Millet
✔ Soybeans
✔ Fried groundnut (grinded)
✔ Dates (for a natural sweetness)
All grinded together into a fine dry powder. If you see this in the market, just know you're holding liquid gold in powdered form 😄
Step-by-Step on How I Made Mine This Morning
1. Boil water in a kettle
Started the day by putting water on the fire — you want that water hot and boiling before anything else begins.
The quantity of water will determine the quantity and quality of the pap
2. Mix the pap powder with cold water
Poured a good amount of the pap powder into a pot, then added cold water gradually, stirring it into a smooth paste. Be mindful of the quantity of the cold water while adding, while stirring ensure there's some thickness .
Stir well, this stage contributes to the smoothness
3. Pour boiling water while stirring
Once the water is properly boiled and was done stirring with the cold water I started pouring the boiled water slowly into the paste while stirring like a pro — the goal is a smooth, thick consistency without any annoying lumps.
4. Boil for a few minutes
Unlike wet akamu, where some people don't have to boil, this one needs a little more fire. So I placed it on low heat for a few minutes to let it thicken and cook through. The flavour while boiling the pap a bit is interesting and inviting.
for sometime cover while boiling because because it pops alot
5. Serve and enjoy!
After boiling for some minutes, the pap is ready!
Poured it into a plate, added some milk and sugar, and trust me — the result was clean and creamy. Paired it with good old bread for that classic touch.
can also add honey or liquid milk to taste
can also use akara(beans cake), biscuits, chin chin
Follow this steps when next you want a good looking, smooth and delicious pap.
How do YOU like your pap?
- Thick or light?
- With sugar and milk or plain?
- Bread, akara, or nothing?
Let me know in the comments — and if you’ve ever messed up pap before, you’re not alone 😂
