AKWAIBOM STATE UNIVERSITY (Obio Akpa Campus); Soon to be Federal University of Agriculture

Each time I visited mom at Obio Akpa in OrukAnam local government area of AkwaIbom state, one thing or the other always take into the school area.
The last time I went was to do my National Identification Number. And some other times, for farm work.

This time, I didn't go alone, I took you my reader with me.
So come with me, as I'll be taking you on a Tour around one of the biggest universities in the south-south region of Nigeria.
But Before then, let's talk about the History of tye school.
Very briefly.

History Of The School

AKSU–Akwaibom State University formerly known as Akwa Ibom State University of Technology (AKUTECH) was brought into existence in October, 2000, when the State Government inaugurated a Committee for the establishment of the school.
This committee was made up of academic, technical experts and professionals who submitted an interim to the Governor of the state as at then in April 2001 , and a final report in was submitted September, that same year.

When the report was accepted, the state government set up an implementation committee to kickstart necessary functions like drafting the law towards the take off of the university.
The Bill was established and passed into law and signed by
The governor ,Arc. (Obong) Victor Attah on 16th of April, 2003.

The bill formally establishing Akwa Ibom State University was signed into law by His Excellency, Chief (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom in September 2010.

After then, Professor Sunday W. Petters was appointed the substantive Vice-chancellor on the 1st January 2010,
and full academic activities commenced in the University. Admission of the first batch of 300 students in the Main Campus(Mkpat Enin) and Obio Akpa Campuses for the 2010/2011 academic session had begun.

Social and management Science were introduced later , amongst other faculties like Art .

Since I visited the ObioAkpa Campus, I'll be talking exclusively about the ObioAkpa Campus, leaving the other for some other time.

Faculties

There are only 5 faculties there which are ;
Faculty of Agriculture
Faculty of Art
Faculty of Social Science
Faculty of Management science.

From the entrance, the first building you might spot on your left is the General building for faculty of Management Science.

The Faculty comprises of a number of Departments such as :
Banking and Finance , Accounting, Marketing , Business Administration and Public Administration.
There are other wonder structures in in the faculty which are used for class lecture halls and class rooms.

Immediately after the Faculty of Management science, you'll see the faculty of Social Science with its own Departments;

Still at the entrance, by your right, you'll spot the School Library.
From what I Heard, the library is updated with numerous books each year.
Science I'm not a student in the school I wasn't granted access into the library.

While moving further into the school, you'll find this statues placed in a T-junction which the left is moving Towards Faculty of Management Science And Social Science. While Right goes towards faculty of Art , then down goes faculty of Agriculture.

There are no commercial transport vehicles in the school. It's prohibited for some reasons. So anywhere you want to go, you walk. Unless you own a vehicle.
The one you see is a school bus for Administrative leave.

In the middle of faculty of Management science and Faculty of Art. There's a large playground which so many sporting activities are carried out. From Football to Volleyball to basket ball and so on.

While walking round the football field, you'll find the General lecture hall. This particular lecture hall can be used by any of the faculties in the school. Both for Academic and Seminary purpose.

Behind the Lecture hall is where the General studies Block is.
And also a small sit out.

Just opposite the lecture hall is the faculty of art Building.
That is just a general building for the faculty. Departments in the building comprises of Theater art, performing art and others.

While other Departments such as Mass communication, English, Linguistics, music , craft and painting amongst others have their own special building away from the General building.

In the middle of the school, there's another junction which goes in four directions.One goes towards the Main Gate. That's where we're coming from. While one direction goes to college road. The college road side does not belong to the school. As indigenous people occupy the area.
The college road leads outside the school too with a mini gate.
Opposite the college roads is heading towards faculty of Agriculture.

Adjacent to the faculty of Agriculture is where the Dance studio and mass communication studio building is located.

Department of Theater art has a Dance studio outside the general building.
Behind the Dance studio is where the Department of Mass communication and thier studio is located.
Department of mass communication owns a studio which activities like Radio/ Television broadcasting , Videography and photography are carried out.

When you walk down, you'll find this wonderful wall of inscription.

At the faculty of Agriculture, there are departments such as ; Animal science, soil science, botany crop science amongst others.

This is a newly completed classroom/ office block.
Not yet utilized;

The faculty of agriculture is the most broad faculty in the University. Has large land areas have been allocated to the faculty to carry out thier various activities.
From farming, to cattle raring and other activities.

There is also a large farm house, here farm produce are stored for sales and re-cultivation.

Infact, while we were touring, I and my brother came across some people discussing about how they'll sell some tomatoes they harvested and split the money.

The faculty also own a Central store where some farm equipment and machines are kept .

Then, this carpentry workshop is also located close to the central store.

Like I said before, large area's of land had been allocated for them.

Going back to the junction at the center of the school, coming from tye faculty of Agriculture. You turn left, you'll Walk pass the Dance studios,then you'll find their cafeteria.

This is also where their small back exit gate is.
But before the exit gate, there's a all road that leads to theirs cattle range.

I forgot to mention earlier, their medical center is located behind the faculty of Management Science.

Now, if you go outside the school gate, From the main gate. There's a large area of land opposite the gate, also owned by the school.

There's a nice football stadium built there, while the remaining part has been used for farmlands.

The university however will soon be changed to the Federal University of Agriculture, From a press release back in August, The federal government of Nigeria stated that the campus at Obio Akpa being use as a branch for the AkwaIbom state university will be used exclusively for agriculture purposes. Both academic and otherwise. Hence, as from 2026 session, all courses and faculty not related with Agriculture will be move the thier main Campus at Ikot Akpaden still in AkwaIbom state.
We should visit there one of these days😁😁.
