Since love willed it so,
that my sorrow endures so long,
do not delay, sad fortune,
for pain shows me no pity,
and without you, I have no cure.

You flee from me, knowing full well
that I traverse perilous seas;
and without you, I wander so lost,
that the more I think I find my way,
the further off course I stray.

For I follow such paths,
and was born under such fate
in this life where I do not live,
that I think I am with myself,
yet I wander far from me.

When I speak, I am silent;
when I am still, I move;
when I walk, I stand still;
when I sleep, I am awake;
when I wake, I am dreaming.

When I call, I answer;
when I cry, I laugh;
when I burn, I feel cold;
when I show myself, I hide;
when I hope, I despair.

I do not know if I know what I say,
for I grasp at nothing certain.
If I flee from my danger,
I find myself ever closer to it.
To have a greater war with myself.

Vain hopes promise me
a thousand favored worlds,
with which I might find rest;
yet I find them all transformed
into other lost worlds.

I dare not dwell on my thoughts,
yet I cannot be without care;
I destroy myself to end myself;
where I am, I cannot stay,
without being in despair.

Everything I see
seems sad to me, with reason.
Things that neither come nor go,
those are the ones I desire,
and all of them bring me sorrow.

I have no hope of remedy,
for she upon whom I rely,
to me, who loves her so deeply,
has Nero’s heart,
and would see me gone from this world!
