Info Wikipedia

Cáceres is the capital of the province of Cáceres in Extremadura , Spain . The city has around 90,000 inhabitants and the municipality has an area of 1,750.33 km², the largest municipality in all of Spain.

There has been a settlement near Cáceres since prehistoric times. Traces of this have been found in the caves of Maltravieso and El Conejar. The city was founded by the Romans in 25 BC .

In the old town ( Ciudad Monumental ), the city walls from antiquity still stand, and this part of the city is famous for the many storks' nests . Within the city walls lies a medieval town with no outward signs of modernization, and for this reason many films have been shot here. The Universidad de Extremadura and two astronomical observatories are located in Cáceres. The city is also a bishopric.

Cáceres was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986 due to its mix of Romanesque , Islamic , Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. 30 towers from the Muslim period still stand in Cáceres, of which the Torre del Bujaco is the most famous.

Cáceres is one of the cities competing to become European Capital of Culture in 2016.
