The Screen Addict Recommends โ Spike Jonze
Iโve been doing a bit of a Spike Jonze re-appreciation lately.
Pondering the wonderful weirdness of ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ผ๐ต๐ป ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐ธ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ต), marveling at Nicolas Cage as Charlie Kaufmanโs alter egos in ๐๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฝ๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ), and cursing at myself for not revisiting ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฏ) sooner.
Aside from being a truly unique and gifted filmmaker โ he is on par with Tarantino in terms of originality, in my opinion โ Jonzeโs early career proves that he is a master of the small screen as well.
Back when physical media were still an integral part of the viewing experience, indie label Palm Pictures paid homage to the worldโs greatest music-video creators with the ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น DVD collection.
The series holds seven volumes, featuring the work of Chris Cunningham, Michel Gondry, Jonathan Glazer, Mark Romanek, Anton Corbijn, Stรฉphane Sednaoui and of course Jonze.
Who could forget the incredible videos Jonze shot for the likes of Daft Punk (โDa Funkโ), Fatboy Slim (โWeapon of Choiceโ, featuring the inimitable Christopher Walken) and Beastie Boys (โSabotageโ and many others).
The Boys from Brooklyn and Jonze formed a creative bond in New York during the early Nineties โ a lifelong connection that culminated in the wonderful documentary/stage-performance hybrid ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฌ) for Apple TV+. A must see if you are a culture junkie like me.
Jonze is perhaps most (in)famous for being the key producer on ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฎ๐๐ since the early days of video โ he actually co-created the show with Jeff Tremaine, with whom he went to the same high school. I wish the home videos I used to make with my buddies had turned into a cultural phenomenonโฆ
To focus on ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฎ๐๐ alone would be exceedingly unfair though, because Jonzeโs entire body of work is massive. His IMDb profile lists nearly 400 titles he was involved with in some capacity.
I urge everyone who reads this to seek out the work of this singular filmmaker and Spike your cinematic fix.
