The Screen Addict Recommends โ ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฐ) and ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฐ)
Iโve spent my weekend in ancient and modern-day Rome.
I know both of these pics came out last year, but Iโm forever catching up on my ever-increasing watchlist. I havenโt even seen ๐๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฐ) yetโฆ
I had been pleasure-delaying ๐๐น๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ for a while, and although I certainly wasnโt disappointed after finally seeing it yesterday, I have some (personal) issues with the film.
Itโs very clear that the filmmakers and studio felt they had to turbocharge every element that made the original film a success. Fair enough, of course, but letโs just say it really strained my suspension of disbelief.
Still, itโs Ridley Scott and Denzel Washington. That alone should make you want to watch it.
๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ is probably going to be my favorite film of 2024 after Iโm completely caught up. Just top-notch across the board; performances, cinematography, score, production design โ it truly is the complete package. How this film did not sweep the 97th Academy Awards is beyond me (again, I havenโt seen ๐๐ป๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ yet).
Director Edward Berger โ who also adapted Erich Maria Remarqueโs anti-war pamphlet Im Westen nichts Neues for Netflix โ displays an attention to detail that only the really great filmmakers know the formula for.
The one Oscar that ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ช๐ฅ win, was for adapted screenplay โ and rightfully so. Peter Straughan meticulously crafted Robert Harrisโ book into a gripping script that somehow makes the serene event of a papal conclave play like a nail-biting Thriller.
It does help, of course, that Harrisโ story holds an incredible twist that is particularly topical in light of the ongoing gender debate.
Seek โem out & get your fix.
