Yes, actually that's what I realized quite recently, after years of wondering why food products in Bulgaria are so expensive. One of the reasons is the 20 percent tax. However, that's not the whole reason, there's more, because this 20 percent doesn't cover differences of 2 or 3 times higher price of certain products than their prices in Germany, for example. Moreover, the reason for these huge differences is not quality, because a large part of Bulgarian products, or at least those available on the Bulgarian market, are of low quality. It is funny that traditional Bulgarian products for which we are famous all over the world, such as yogurt and white cheese, are actually fakes with artificial flavors. But that's a topic for another day, really.
Turkey... I've said this kind of joke before that it would probably have been better for us to remain under Turkish slavery than to fall under Russian one. Because Turkey continues to be a symbol of quality, despite all the global trends of garbage and low standards. I am really impressed by this country and what you are telling here, despite their political situation. The people there still enjoy quality food and quality products of all kinds, use quality health services, quality medicines, etc. things that are already unfamiliar in Bulgaria, the cesspool of Western Europe.
I've been thinking a lot on the same topics, probably there are many factors.
Also one typical national characteristic - to demonstrate one is clever than everyone else. Hence adding as much profit as possible, the heck with the future...
