#what is Renal function test?
Renal Function Test (RFT) or Kidney Function Test is a blood and urine test that evaluates the functioning of the kidneys. This test helps to see if the kidneys are doing their job of cleaning the blood and removing waste products from the body properly.
Main tests included in RFT:
Serum Creatinine:
Creatinine is a waste product that is produced by the muscles.
Normal level: 0.6 – 1.3 mg/dL
High levels may indicate kidney failure.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN):
Urea is produced by the breakdown of protein.
Normal level: 7 – 20 mg/dL
High levels may be a sign of kidney failure, dehydration, or eating too much protein.
Uric Acid:
Excess uric acid in the body may be a sign of kidney disease or gout.
Electrolytes:
Example: Sodium, Potassium, Chloride
These substances are controlled by the kidneys. Too much or too little of them can indicate kidney failure.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR):
This test measures the kidneys' ability to filter blood.
The lower the GFR, the worse the condition of the kidneys is considered.
Urinalysis:
The presence of protein, blood, or other abnormal substances in the urine can be a sign of kidney disease.
