Paris day 2
Hello steemians !
The Gloriette de Buffon, located in Paris's Jardin des Plantes, is a remarkable 18th-century structure. Erected in 1786, it is considered the oldest metal construction in Paris.
Perched atop the "Grand Labyrinth," a spiraling mound in the garden's western section, the Gloriette offers panoramic views of the surrounding greenery.
This nine-meter-high pavilion is an architectural marvel, predating the works of Victor Baltard by over 50 years and Gustave Eiffel by a century. It ingeniously combines five metals: iron, copper, gold, bronze, and lead.
The term "Gloriette" derives from pavilions where ancient warriors were honored, reflecting its purpose as a place of contemplation and admiration.
Commissioned by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, a renowned naturalist and director of the King's Garden (now Jardin des Plantes), the Gloriette exemplifies the Enlightenment era's fascination with science and nature. Its design not only serves as an ornamental feature but also symbolizes the period's innovative spirit.
Over the centuries, the Gloriette de Buffon has witnessed the evolution of the Jardin des Plantes and remains a testament to Paris's rich architectural heritage. Today, visitors can ascend the labyrinth's winding paths to reach this historic pavilion, immersing themselves in a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
Have a nice day !
