He ALWAYS Wanted to Catch One of These!
A dream came true this day!
My friend had only dreamed of catching gar until now, but now he's done it! With his family being newer transplants to the Ozarks, there are certain blessings around here that they just had not experienced. Personally, while there are a lot of cool things you could do out there in the world (i.e. catching Burmese pythons in the Everglades, hooking into a Peacock Bass in the Amazon, spearfishing Mahi-Mahi off the coast of Hawaii, etc.) I like to make sure that I can master my own domain, and interact with the environment around here in a way that is incredibly beneficial to my family.
That’s where catching gar comes in. They are a readily available food supply and we can catch a lot of them easily enough now that we’ve mastered the technique. I thought it best to take him out to the lake and show him how we like to jug fish the local Longnose Gar from our kayaks, which has become our top method for a great harvest of them. It was a rather slow day, but it worked, because we did get a couple, and he managed to get his first ever! One of my favorite parts about gar is that if I get a four footer, the whole family can eat and be filled. Enjoy the show!
